About the event
Climate leaders stress urgency of pardon as climate advocates face new threats of corporate “criminalization” for exercising their free speech rights
A broad coalition of youth climate advocates, members of Congress, and preeminent environmental and human rights organizations are joining Steven Donziger outside of the White House on June 12 for a rally in support of Donziger’s campaign for a presidential pardon. The gathering is being held a week after 50 major human rights and environmental organizations led by Amnesty International and Greenpeace sent a letter to the White House urging President Biden to immediately pardon Donziger and investigate Chevron’s environmental crimes in Ecuador and legal abuses of the U.S. justice system.
Donziger was detained from 2019 to 2022 in New York on a misdemeanor contempt charge prosecuted by a Chevron law firm, making him the only individual in U.S. history to be prosecuted by a private corporation; his case has been condemned by three federal judges and dozens of international jurists.
Featuring:
- Environmental and human rights advocate Steven Donziger
- Representatives from Amnesty International, Amazon Watch, Gen-Z for Change, Climate Defiance, Sunrise Movement, and others.
- Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA)
